Mahi Ve

If you’ve read the About Us page, you’re pretty much up to speed– but here’s a little more detail on the blog:

On average, we’ll post two movie reviews a week. They’re not all going to be really detailed, but they will hopefully help you in determining whether a movie is worth watching, beyond my criteria of “Does it have Shahrukh Khan? Yes? I’m game,”.

We’ll also share links and videos (lots of videos) we think you’ll enjoy. These will be more frequent than the movie reviews, because it’s a lot easier to embed a video than to try to explain why John Abraham really is a good actor…

Then, whenever we jolly well feel like it, there will be short posts about confusing Bollywood/Indian/Hindi things we’ve figured out. Like who Sallu, Piggy Chops, and Bebo are. And why Sikhs wear turbans.

And whatever else we feel like posting, of course.

So, for today, here’s a very favorite song/video; Mahi Ve:

It’s from the movie Kal Ho Naa Ho (KHNH), and features Shah Rukh Khan (0:03), Saif Ali Khan (0:16), Preity Zinta (0:16), and Jaya Bachchan (3:39). Making guest appearances in this song are Rani Mukerji (3:01) and my beloved Kajol (4:39).

The song is sung by Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Sadhana Sargam, Shankar Mahadevan, and Sujata Bhattacharya (Madhushree). If I knew who sang what, I would tell you… but for now, you’ll have to believe I’ll update this when I know.

This scene in the movie is the engagement ceremony of Saif and Preity’s characters.

And it’s my favorite.

If you enjoyed it (of course you did) you might like to buy the mp3 from Amazon… it’s my favorite thing to listen to while doing dishes.

Kal Ho Na Ho was the 3rd Indian film I watched (after KKHH and Main Hoon Na), and Mahi Ve was my favorite song for about 2 years (I’ve been watching Bollywood for 3 1/2)! The dance is simple enough for me to delude myself into thinking I can do it right, and the joyousness of the music makes the sad undercurrent that much more poignant.

Nice job on your blog! It’s always fun to read reviews from Bollywood newbies, because the excitement is infectious.

KHNH was my third film, too! I have yet to see Main Hoon Na, though.
You can probably do the dance better than Saif, even if you’re terrible. :D

      Thanks for the encouragement!
